DOWNZONE - noun (doun-zohn)
The sad and despoiled remnants of the old world. To the Syndicates and most Uptown residents, they are bitter memories of a failed system that stubbornly refuse to go away. Living constantly in the shadow of the great monoliths of Uptown, this is where those who were left behind eke out their existence. Non-consumers, non-chipped, and as far as the Syndicates are concerned, non-existent.
Consumer Migration: Since the Skyward Migration, most buildings have been left in a state of disrepair and there is little in the way of law enforcement. The Downzones are replete with crime, gang warfare and social unrest. What little direct influence the Syndicates exert here is usually in the shape of hired mercenaries or sponsored paramilitary groups. Otherwise they are content ith simply cordoning off the Downzones to prevent crime and unrest from spilling over into the pristine Uptown districts, while dispatching the occasional Agent to deal with the worst subverter cells (see entries, T.W.B., CONFA).
